Default advantage of re-locating rear shocks?

so what exactly is the reason that people move both shocks to behind the axle? and how beneficial is it?

The biggest advantage is the adjustability of the shocks. Stock shocks flip kit and caltracs I for a 1.93 60ft relocated shocks rancho 9 way adjustables I got a 1.70 60ft. I think that proves enough that they work. And I got a way smoother ride out of the truck on the street

Shocks only work in one direction, basically the straighter you can apply force to them, the more effective they are. In the stock location they are tilted away from vertical, which lets them operate over a wide range of articulation angles, but we dont care about that since we dont offroad. The more you can align them with the direction of movement (straight up and down in our case) the better they will work.

A lot of go carts and formula cars use a fancy wishbone setup to redirect the force to horizontal instead of vertical since space is easier to come by.

I realize our trucks have exactly zero in common with a formula car, except both have an engine and tires, but the concept is the same.

Just do it, then post up results. I've been wanting to do this for a while. Just been too busy.
Are you running meth on your truck?

He basically said it... They operate better in a straight line. Mount them in a better orientation with the direction of travel they are controlling and they will definitely control it better. They're pretty inefficient for what we are doing being side loaded

A simple way to look at it, shocks operate proportional to their mounting angle. Example:

A shock mounted at 90* (or parallel to axle movement) will be 100% efficient.

A shock mounted at 45* will be 50% efficient.

Whether they are in front or behind the axle doesn't matter (to an extent). That extent being axle wrap.
