The marine forums have quite a bit of info about the 8.1. AFter GM's HP3 525hp/560 lb/ft 87 octane racing engine experiment, there was a company that continued on after GM pulled its sponsorship and took the HP3 furthur to around 570hp on 87 octane with ported stock heads before the engine let go in long term durability testing.
If you know what you are doing, you can really help out the iron 8.1 heads. Its either do that or go Raylar. I know which way the Raylar folks would have you go. Nothing wrong with that as they are selling a product to earn a living.
One of the keys of making big power with any big block is the exhaust. Get the exhaust wrong and it could cost you a LOT of power. An example of this is the stock Vette and Camaro exhausts. On one of the hi-po 427's the stock Camaro exhaust cut the power number in half when compared to the same engine in the Vette. Gm didnt spend much effort in the Camaro exhaust because off the buyers were ripping the manifolds and exhaust off and installing headers anyways.

Ever try to buy flywheel bolts for an 8.1
They are an M11 x 1.5 pitch
What a F*cking pain in the ***
Where do you see an M11 bolt? no f*cking where
::end rant::
I guess this was GM's way of saying "hey F U for buying a big block!"
