Postin up for my cousin, he just got a 03 ecsb 2wd auto dmax and hes curious as to what shell run stock in the 1/4, and what performance mods to do to it, it came with a banks exhaust im guessing turbo back ,he asked me but im not fully sure on what mods for dmaxs i told him he'd prob be good with a programmer/tune and an intake... ive heard good things about PPE programmers, are there any other good ones??? also he wants to know how hard he can push it in factory form, i told him no more than 100hp more while its stock but i told him he should stay around no more than 80hp more... am i telling him the right info or no?

An EFI live tune would do him good.

If he's looking for just a little boost in performance and economy, almost any of the handhelds will do him fine. PPE's handhelds are generally regarded as the best of the plug 'n play tuners. If he's looking for some serious power, something from an established tuner that uses EFI Live or HPTuners is really the best way to go. The Allison is really only good for maybe 100+ horsepower over stock before it needs some beefing up and R&R. Intakes won't do much until you're around the 500RWHP+ range, and there are free mods that help out with that anyway. If he does plan to start doing stuff to it, he'll also need to get some good gauges on there like a pyrometer to watch EGT's as well as a boost gauge. He'll also have to start doing fuel mods like lift pumps and shims if he wants to make real power. This stuff can easily become addicting, but it sure isn't cheap .

I have to disagree about this. If we were talking about gasser's then yes I would say stay away from handheld programmers but they work great on Diesels.

I have ran both the PPE and Edge Evo unit on my truck and both run great. I decided to keep the Evo because I really like the built in gauges and it came with an EGT probe as well.
Others that people have commented that work well are Diablo Predator, Bully Dog, Banks, and even HyperTech if you want to save some cash.

Dam, I just looked up at Edge's website and appearently they don't offer it for the LB7. Looks like it's only available for 2006 LLY and newer.
Oh well, I know the other products are available for it. He could get the Edge Attitude or Juice though if he wants to stick w/ Edge.
