Are those tranny's as strong as a 4l80?
if so GRAB ANOTHER GEAR!!!!
i my 6.0 pulls the 8880 lb trailer good at 2000rpm
i would imagine that you having a manual, 2wd etc. could pull even better than me at 2000rpm... i bet your milage would improve at 2000 rpm still runnin 65...

My understanding is you are not supposed to pull in overdrive. It is inherantly weaker, right?
Though, I admit I used 5th w the 4.10s, because I couldn't stand the high rpms on the highway. I pretty much did the swap so 4th gear would be more usable.
But 5th gear when empty has yielded what I consider great highway mileage for a 2500.
You may be right about getting more MPG while towing in OD, but I would hate to gamble and lose by having a failure.

Just towed the (~6500 lb) camper and got an average of 10.5 MPG using 4th (1:1).
Then got an average of 18.5 MPG driving home (not towing) using 5th (.73 OD).
Both a mix of interstate (65-70 mph) and highway (55-60 mph).
I am very happy w this mod!

Still very happy with this mod. Driving around town is much less hectic and interstate is much quieter. The road manners are much improved and I feel no lack of acceleration or towing ability.
I see no downside to this mod with a manual trans. I suspect it would also work w an auto.
