Default Duramax Questions

I am possibly looking into buying an '04 GMC Duramax, how do I know the difference between an 04 and an 04 and a half? Also, how do I know what engine it is? I know there are several different ones such as the LB7 and LLY. Any help is appreciated!

Check the VIN.

Also the The oil fill cap will say " Huele Motuer" or something like that if its an LLY.

LLY will also have a Variable vane turbo and the exhaust will " fluctuate"

The LB7 sounds like a deep big block chevy.

Can you take a pic of the motor?

Not at the moment, I just looked at it this weekend. It is wrecked and being rebuilt, I was just doing some research on Durmax's and noticed several different engine types and was wondering how to tell. Is there a website I can go to and check the VIN?
