Default Duramax starting problems.

my friend has a 2007 duramax with 145k miles. About 2 weeks ago he was having idling issues. then today he started his truck and it fired up normal but then 5 seconds later it just shut off. When he went back to start it up, the truck would crank but not start up. what could be the problem with this? The batteries are new and does not appear to be the issue. Let me know what you think. I appreciate the help.

You have air in the fuel...
Loosen the bleeder screw on fuel fitler housing, pump prime pump till you get just diesel coming out of it.. Now just crank till it starts... about 10 sec

You probably have a bad filter housing, they are about $175 from dealership complete and comes with new fuel filter... Easy to change

seems to be a relatively common problem...had a 5500 top kick in the shop a few months ago with the same problem

Yes the diaphrams go bad.

Also ive seen small pinholes in the fuel lines them selfs causing same issue.

The Duramax has an engine driven CP3 fuel pump so it "sucks" fuel from the tank, instead of a tank mounted pump pushing the fuel to the engine.

Hard to find leaks this way.

This is one reason i have a lift pump near my tank to help push fuel to the CP3, also needed if your running big tunes, but i think every dmax should have a lift pump.

Also double check and make sure the fuel filter is installed correctly.

I ve had the old o ring stick inside the housing before when i went to install the new filter.

And take a dab of diesel fuel and run around the o ring of the filter before install to help it seat better.

I did not want to make a new thread but figured this would work. I just got my 05 25000hd diesel today from the auction yard. I have two dead batteries and when we put jumper cables on the truck the outside lights all turn on and so does the odometer showing the mileage but the dash does not light up and the truck does not start at all. I am hoping its just because it needs batteries and not another problem. The truck was listed as starting fine but I am sure it sat for a while in the auction yard. Any specific things I should look for before buying two new batteries. I checked fuses and none are blown. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance guys.
