you didn't say anything about needing 4x4 right? if 4x4 is not a priority you can get a LS LLY in your price range for sure. tow tune, trans go JR, and an exhaust should round out your mods if you want it reliable and dependable.
sry tim i don't own a Diesel but i wanted to voice my opinion.

Some of you have posted about GM's IFS front ends not holding up. From what I've seen over the years, this is mostly a problem when torsion key lifts put the ball joints at extreme operating angles, and worn out shocks don't get replaced.
Oh, and it's not like the Dodge & Ford don't have their own front end problems. I see them in my shop all the time with shot ball joints, track bars, and knuckle u-joints. They seem to eat them up about every 60K miles or so, like clockwork. A solid front axle is better than IFS at some things, but it's definately not the "end all of your problems forever" front end.

I HATE dodge trackbars. I think those things are cemented in from the factory. I broke a pickle fork and a gear puller trying to get the damn bj out of the knuckle on my buddies truck.
Tim with you running that additive I'd bet you're fine. How much does it cost you a tank to run it? ULSD and emissions restrictions are killing the diesels

I don't know much about the Ford or Dodge diesels, but I will tell you that I absolutely love my D-max. If you search you can find good deals on them...bought mine in Sept 09 with 84k miles from a guy in Montana for $23,500. Other than a bad EGR valve, which I disabled in the tune, I have had zero problems with it 2 years later and 150k miles on the odo. I will never own another gas truck as long as I can afford to drive a diesel.
I did tune the truck not long after I got it...then started to worry about the trans so I put the stock tune back in. No complaints....still has plenty of power. Ran a load of tile and my mom's Lexus SUV on a trailer to Colorado about a month ago and averaged 12.5 mpg running at 65mph going from 1200 ft elevation to 9000 ft. I think the overall weight of my rig was about 18,000 lbs. 3500 lbs tile, 7200 lbs truck, 2500 lbs trailer, 4700 lbs Lexus. Pretty good IMO.

Im going to be different here and say you don't need a dmax in your situation if your not traveling far and only on occasion are going to make longer trips and are towing 10k a 6.0 would work finw for you yes a dmax will tow it easier and faster but like it aS said early they cost more to fix when they break
I currently have and tow 10k with a 6.0 with 4.10 gears and it works fine it will keep up with my flaws 7.3 pulling the same amount of weight. I do want to buy a dmax myself not because the 6.0 isn't sufficient but because I am looking at getting a 18k trailer if I had limited money to spend I buy a 6.0 then put the rest on a bigger boat

I think its like 6.89 or something at wally world.
After all this Lubricity talk, i was buying Allison spin on filters today at the local diesel shop, and saw a bottle of Lucas Fuel conditioner and lube additive, It was 12.70 for the bottle and treats 100 gal if i remember. So im going to prob switch to lucas as its roughly the cost of the powerservice i buy now, and ive heard good things about Lucas.
Yes , you are right, Emmisions are killing us and the goverment is ruining our toys.
