Default Was there ever a 502 bbc w/ a Edelbrock multiport F.I. system in a 93 c3500?

I have already searched and cannot find info on this site or anything on google even. I have found a 93 3500 crew cab long box 2wd locally with a 502 bbc and has a edelbrock performer multi-point F.I. setup. The guy says its a factory deal and it has a sticker saying "this vehicle equipped with a general motors corporation 8.2l engine 12360893 ARB E.O. No. D-126-4" this was in a picture he sent me. Does anybody have any info they can provide on this or point me where I need to go about it?

The truck probably came with a 454 and TBI and he probably installed the HT502 retro kit in his truck. The edelbrock intake is aftermarket and he also added that.

The 502 is s crate motor. Never sold in a production vehical. Now it may have been a prototype or dealer installed but as everything I have ever know was the fact that the 502 was only sold as an aftermarket crate motor.

The retro kit sounds like something I wouldn't mind doing to my "93 suburban if I never get to put a D-Maxx in it.

GM introduced the Gen V 7.4 L 454 EFI in 1991. The Gen VI 7.4L 454 was released in 1996 and finally the Gen VII 8.1L 496 in 2001. As stated earlier, the truck in question would have originally come equipped with a TBI 7.4L and someone later swapped in the HT502 crate engine package in conjunction with the Edelbrock MPFI kit. The original Edelbrock kits had you replace your existing TBI intake manifold with theirs, which was equipped with fuel rails and Pico style injectors. You would reinstall your existing throttle-body, modified by removing the injector pods and installing a block-off plate. After purchasing the system, you then sent in your VIN number and they would send you a chip burned to install into your ECM.

Beginning in the late-1970s Chevrolet brought out the 502 V-8. Its original job was not to be used as a performance engine but instead as a workhorse. It was placed in fleet vehicles, such as large trucks and vans, and some police cruisers like California Highway Patrol chase vehicles. It then became a mainstay in the marine industry, where it was developed into a more performance piece. From there it was finally introduced over the counter as a Gen V crate engine through GM Performance Parts catalogs in 1992. While there were select dealers such as Sallee Chevrolet that sold the marine versions of the Mark IV 502’s rated at 450hp back in the day, most people don’t even realize that they existed prior to the Gen V’s release and you will have a hard time finding any documentation relating to the earlier models. I have yet to find any printed documentation related to the history or items especially catering to casting numbers of these earlier engines.

WOW! Nice write up Jarrod. How do u remember all this stuff?!?

I sure didn't know the 502 predates back that far (late 70's) but a boater probably would. So were they always made by GM or did MerCruiser build em ,or take over building em at some point?

Agreed, 502 crate motor only, not sold in a production vehicle. Now it may have been a prototype or dealer installed. If I may add, IIRC, u could get an EO # if replacing a 454 w/. this crate. And what ever parts spec'd to go along w/. kit.
I wanna say GM did this on SB's for 3rd Gen Camaro (back in the so called performance rebirth era), but u had to use everything to retain all legality & get your EO #.

Jarrod, I was never into BB's, as when I was just a wee tot, pollution was just starting to drive em into the ground. But, 2 of my favs I got to drive.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Those are 2 vehicles GM should have produced.

Coolside Pickup, 510 cubes AWD, I have a 1/4milevid of this somewhere.

Coolside 2 , 496/GEN 7 fitted with older heads GEN V/VI heads 575hp@5700 rpm/605 lb-ft torque@4500 rpm.

The 502 is rpo LX2 it was built of the 1991+GEN5 block.,
There was a 502 that Merc built using Bowtie blocks, but these were not production blocks. There are a few instances where Mercruiser had engines before GM released them.

I have always wondered about that HT502 converstion setup. It uses the Vortec 454 cam, 454SS pickup manifolds/cats, custom PROM and was rated at 338 hp. That same HT engine is now rated at 377hp/510 lb/fttorque.

So someone took the emissions legal GMPP HT502 kit, and did an Edlebrock TBI to MPFI conversion on that.

And yes, GMPP did a conversion kit for the carbed 305 F-bodies, it allowed the emissions legal transplant of a 355 ZZ engine, it ran high 13's IIRC.

peace
