1968 project 4x4.... 307??
I have a 1968 C10 with the 307 and about 98,XXX miles on her. its a 2wd with holes through the training arms... but, i have a 76 4x4 scottsdale with a nice setup, and plan on transferring the 68 onto the 76 frame, (4x4, ps, pb, a/c, etc)
the 307 engine in the 68 is pretty strong still, i have some general updates and mods done to it and it seems to run out fine.
what kind of luck do you suppose i will have with the 307 once 4x4? i have heard tales mis fortune!!
i cant see buying a new engine with a running one just sitting here. but i can definetly see the advantage of buying the new engine.
i guess just looking for a guide, untill recently i have only owned.... well not any small block chevys.

i guess no one really cars about the 307, my brother was telling me that it is a good engine with a bad wrap, he says that it is the same block as the 327- anyone confirm?
and with a bore, heads, cams it should be a very solid and powerful engine.
right now it sits with what appears to be the untouched original carb and well everything else original, and it has plenty of power with the choke on 3/4 of the way!! but other wise it is kind of lame
i just finally bought a new edelbrock 600cfm performer carb and performer aluminum intake
new dual exhaust from manifolds back, but not installed waiting to buy the new downpipes
electronic ignition
well see how it fairs after these mods
the truck is a work in progress and as long as i dont wreck it in about 5 years i should have a nice truck!
my inital plan involves a new gm crate engine but i will probably have to rebuilt the tranny that is on the 76' frame so in an attempt to save some green i am thinking about just working over the 307 in the truck
i read an article in a magizine where they built a 307 and got about 350HP pretty pricy but it was done, i'll have to dig that back out and read it again. but it might have been a olds big block 307.... but i have heard worse stories about those!

The 307 share the stroke with a 327 @ 3.25" but has a smaller bore (283 ci bore I think). I had one in a 68 2wd that I put a saginaw 4 speed in it and it had the 6cyl 4.10 rear and it was fun to drive. I used to pull my race car to the track with it 2-3x a week and it did well. It was fun to wind it out the frame till the valve floated (it had no tach)and bang gears as well I say keep it if it is good. The heads suck on the 307's but they have small chambers. You could get some HO 305 heads for a little pep and a small cam. The 305 HO (high ouput heads) had a small chamber (similar to the 307's but can't remember exactly the cc's) and larger intake valve than the 307. 307 had a 1.72" intake i believe and the 305 HO heads had 1.94". Just some thoughts.

so... if it shares the same stroke as the 327 it should be able to be bored out to a 327... just for fun.
how much would a 307 have to be cut to reach a 327ci i wonder???
and i will have to get new heads anyways, i dont know what it has on it but i will need the accessory holes for my a/c and... i dont know what else, but ill at least need them for the a/c.
i dont think the power steering bolts on the head in anyway, does it?

The 307 is a good motor just like Turbogibbs says, I ran one in my Super stock oval track car for the last half of the season one year when my "good" 350 blew up. I did just as Gibbs said and had a set of 305 head that where cut for the 1.94 valves, and it ran STRONG. I won several races with it against a lot of 350's. After that season was over I pulled it out and sold it to a guy who put it in his street rod. That was about 9-10 years ago and he is still running it and LOVES it. Says it haul ***. They are by no mean a shity engine.

i guess i really have no reason not to stick with it, might as well run it till it wont anymore!
I just installed my new dual exhaust, had the local shop bend me some new down pipes. I put 2" pipe with glasspacks and exits just before the rear tires and it sounds awesome, no noticeable power difference...yet
the most noticeable difference is the lack of exhaust fumes in the cab!!!!
as much as i enjoyed getting loaded off the fumes
it's also nice to be able to have a conversation in the truck going down the road!!
before it had a muffler -get this- rivited to the y pipe that was full of holes and hung with coat hanger!!! worked i suppose

..... i know i should have taken a picture
you can kind of see it hanging down in the first picture above
but that does it no justice, the guy at the muffler shop threw out the old, i never saw it off the truck or i would have captured it for you guys
i made a Paint mockup to help depict the beast
