Default rear end issue...

so heres the deal i have a 1991 c1500 pickup. just got done building my 383 not even fully broke in yet and now im having rear end problems. i know, i know, the rear end is the same one that was behind the v6 so everyone is gonna tell me its shot, to weak, blah blah, but i just want everyones opinion before i start tearing it down and replacing everything. heres the deal, it started popping a little when taking off easy (have a manual trans) wasn't a bad pop just a small one but noticable (has a new UV joint). today i got it out and was riding around with some friends and it popped a couple of times and now when driving it makes a loud winding sound (simular to a car driving fast in reverse). Now my thought it the gears aren't meshing right and something has gave out to make this happen. I plan on tearing it down tomorrow afternoon and see what i find. But any chance this could me a bearing or an axle or hopefully not the pinion? Or is it just simply the gears in the rear end are worn out? Its a 10 bolt open diff (i want a possi anyways so this would be a good time to get one). So, what is everyones opinion on the issue? Thanks guys

You can make any rearend last, it just depends on how you drive it. You could beef up a 10 bolt to handle cruise-in drives and the occasional throttle jab or shot down the track. Just stay away from any type of slick, hard hooks, or high rpm launches. Being that you have a manual trans, you are loading and unloading the ring n pinion with each **** most times. With an automatic there is constant pressure. Id throw a nice ring n pinion in, some nice axles and c-clip eliminators and go with it.

Because the 12 bolts out there under our trucks are a dime a dozen, itd be worth putting a good one under. Alot of trucks that are being parted out now could give you instant relief of this issue and get you some time before a good rebuild is in order. I am looking into a 12 bolt for my 83 C10. Im not gonna run the **** out of it with slicks. Itll be a cruiser and semi dd.

You could re-build the 10 bolt but you won't know how bad it is till you get in there...

Best option would be a 14 bolt 9.5 SF rear end from a heavy 1/2 ton, light duty 3/4 ton 88-98 pick up. if its 2wd it will be the 64.5 wms-wms and if its 4x4 it will be the 67.5 wms-wms.

Haven't seen a 12 bolt for the 88-99 style pick ups and I wouldn't waste the time trying to make a 12 bolt fit.

should bolt right in. you will end up needeing a conversion U joint and you may have to shorten your drive shaft 1/2 deppending on your set up.

I think I remember reading that in 88 they started switching the truck 10bolts to 30spline. So your 91 should be 30spline.
