Anyways. The Cummins is IT when it comes to Diesel's. You can expect 14-18 in town/city/hauling your boat all around average.
As for justifying the cost of the Diesel? Simple....RESALE value!!!!!! LONGEVITY!!!!! BIO-DIESEL!!!!!! PULLING POWER!!!!!!
My truck in my sig gets:
16 MPG around town.
18-20 MPG depending on how fast I drive on the highway.
15 MPG hauling a friends car to the local race track on the weekend's
9 MPG hauling 44' enclosed trailer, race car, welding machine, generator, engine hoist, tools, etc....about 27K LBS
16-17 MPG hauling a 18' car hauler, and a 1971 Dodge Challenger from Oregon to Texas @ 65-67 MPH.
Those are REAL figures, figured by hand, not the overhead. I have averaged EVERY tank of fuel since I have owned the truck, and have put over 40K on the truck in a little over a year. I change the fuel filter every other oil change, and I run a fuel additive to every 2-3 tanks of fuel.
Get the 3.73 gear, do NOT get the 4.10's unless you plan on hauling 25k+ all the time (which from what you said, you are not).
Good luck. And once you get the CTD,you will wonder why you did not do it before.

awesome!! thanks a lot! I am definately going with the 3.73 gear, 4.10 would be extreme overkill, thanks for the specs. And where is this bio diesel everyone speaks of?

The fuel econmy empty is around 20 mpg, and diesel is cheeper than gas here. Heavy duty vehicles are not required to be tested for fuel consumption that is why they are left blank on the window stickers.
