need advice on building Dodge mud drag truck
OK, here goes. I normally race a Blazer that's mildly built. I have the opportunity to buy a 94 Dodge Dakota 4x4 pickup. It has a 318 efi motor, with automatic trans. Need some ideas.
First of all, you need to understand how different mud racing is from regular 1/4 mile drag racing. It's only a 150'-200' mud track, that can be anywhere from wet dirt to a damned swamp. So, I need rpms, right now.
I plan to build this to race 2 classes. The lower class restricts me to 15" of vacuum, so cam choice will be very important. Also, no after-market heads are allowed. My choices for fuel delivery are also limited. In my opinion, I'd be better off leaving the EFI on it, than changing to a carb setup. But opinions are made to be changed. The cubic inch limit in the lower class is 557 c.i. BUT, I can't go to a big block in the class, either. Has to stay small block.
We have a 360 we can build, or just stay with the 318 and work some magic with it.
The truck will be running 33" Super Swamper Boggers all the way around.
So, anyone have some ideas???? I'm not wanting to spend a fortune, but I will dump decent money into this. After all, when you're racing 30 other trucks, a $ 100 prize isn't worth mortgaging the house.
To get an idea of how these races look, go to youtube and search for nebraska mud racing. There's lot's of videos on there. I'll be racing Sportsman and Super Stock. Some of these guys get down that 200' track in 2-3 seconds.
