Hey guy I am about to start working on my dads mid 80's dodge that he has to get running again and I got a few questions for yall. First off here are all the specs I have.

360 HO
edlebrock intake 1500-6500rpm
edlebrock 650 carb
long tube headers
and around a 6-6500rpm cam not sure on specs
Mallory distributor

He has not had an easy time keeping a stock trans behind it for some reason, so is there any that are better than the others and what can you do to make them better? Shift kit, V-body, what? Also it starts popping and does not like to rev past 4500 in gear it revs out smoothly in park. So what do yall think?

what trans is he running. a 727 rebuilt with quality parts should put an end to his trans problems. sounds like timing or valves floating.

ya a 727 I think that the plug wires are one off cause I cant see the timing mark. I am working on the hei swap on it, but I need to make sure about the wires.

I would get rid of that Mallory distributor, get a MSD unit.
The distributor system on a Mopar is ran off the pump gear, you do not line the distributor up by lining it up to the #1 cyl, however the cap has to point to the #1 plug wire.
I would get the engine to the compression stroke on the #1 cylinder TDC, make sure its the compression stroke by checking the balancer
Or pull the valve cover off and make sure the valves are closed.

Now look where the rotor is pointing in relation to the #1 plug wire.
Adjust with a long flathead if necessary.

Also check the fuel PSI at the carb.
most guys are running around 5-7psi

What fuel pump is he running?

Sounds like this is a fueling or timing issue.

Firing order is:
1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

On the cap it should say 1.
and then simply follow the firing order around on the cap with the wires.

he has a holley electric pump with a reg. set at around 5-9psi. The cap does not have any markings on it at all that I have found. I was thinking that it is a timing issue since I cant read the timing with a light.

Like it's been mentioned, ditch the Mallory. A stock Mopar distributor or an MSD will be better IMHO. A stock dist. with an orange ECU box will be plenty for a 360. Just remember on the timing. Haynes manuals are your friend.
