I didn't think the vortec max was made back in 97. The plain vortec yes but not the vortec max. 
You may have a chance at an F150 in stock form but it may be about it. I wouldn't dismiss GM truck performance vs others so soon. The 4.8l engines are the smallest v8s to get in these very heavy trucks.
You would have had a good chance at beating the trucks you listed if you would have gotten the 5.3l. However just like it was mentioned before, the LSX engines in these trucks love to breath. 
Work on exhaust mods with LONG TUBE headers and a 3" single exhaust. Definatly a custom tune not a hand held tune. The spacer really doesn't do much except for making sound. Maybe a tq converter depending on how many miles you have on the trans. Keep the faith. You have a great looking truck that just needs some perofrmance mods. 
EDIT: Just noticed that your new to the fourm. Welcome. Stick around and read up on the other fourm members trucks. We have some really impressive ones around here. foose04 has a 4.8l that is putting out over 500hp on stock internals. There isn't many gas engines out there that will take more abuse than the GM LSx series. Check out the stickys section in the fourms there is a rediculous amount of knowlage and products that have been tested. Some good buys with great HP numbers some aren't worth their weight in recycled material.

you will diff need at least boltons and good tune to beat those trucks pretty good. If you run into a modded hemi then you will still lose. i ran a 13.9@94 mph on 20's with superchips and LT headers and intake only. just to give you a idea and 14.2 in the texas summer heat with the same mods

It's a 4.8! Not going to be fast right out the box. I found that a tune and converter really woke my 5.3 up. And a CAI... Just put a blower on it and you'll be fine!!
