first time at the track coming up

Gate on and up is your best bet. I have only seen one person who gained from gate off vs. on.
I have seen a good number of people gain with the gate on and up. The way I look at it is that the tail gate is only about 50 lbs. It is also in the absolute best spot for traction, and it has been proven many times that tailgate on and up is best for fuel economy due to better aerodynamics.

well today was a buzzkill, went to go do a burnout before my first run and the rear end let loose BAD. ill post up pictures pretty soon, chunked a nice bit out of the differential itself, and every spider gear came apart which ended up taking out the ring and the pinion both. rear end is jammed so i dont know if i can even get the carrier out. and the trans also may be hurt...
speaking of that with the trans (rear end locked up) it felt like itd free rev in drive, when i manually put it in first or 2nd it felt like it actully engaged. just had the truck up on the jackstands a few minutes ago(d-shaft out) and the speedo and output were both turning/operating. so i assume the trans may be alright then? or could i still be SOL, also the custom driveshaft that i had in this thing had solid u joints in it, and now somehow theyve got quite a bit of play...to say the least today has been hell lol

Sorry to hear. I would just pick up a complete rear end with what you want in it. It should save you some $$. Good luck on the rebuild!

If you can hook something to the diff, use a winch or something to get it out.. haha..
Last 4L60E i broke we had to hook a 4wheeler winch to the driveshaft to pull it out of the transmission.
When your rear busted it could kill a ujoint easy.

z06 its all good man, its part of racing. i was expecting it to go just not this soon lol. what sucks more than anything is it had to go right when im unemployed and dont have the cash to fix it so shes gonna be sitting for a while until i can gather the money. the gearset(4.88) thats in it was hardened, if i can get this jammed carrier out ill gladly post pictures, ring gear aint bad but the pinion definitley didnt like it...and jonathan, i wish man, honestly like i cant get this thing to move to get to the bolt for the centering pin...its starting to look pretty bad right now. but DAMN dude, thats pretty fucked up to say the least!! and as for the ujoint, it WAS a solid...lol
all in all the rear end i could give a **** less about, the fact that crap with the trans happened yesterday is what really scares me. im just hoping shes alright
