I get on average about 75-80K out of my transmissions now. When I FIRST got into this the lifespan of my trans was measured in hours.

Short list:
80E (stock w/a shift kit is fine)
Trans crossmember modified
Wiring harness
2nd VSS wired to PCM (search the right pin# for your application)
80E converter, Stock (see comments below)
Driveshaft shortened
Tune modified

All that, if you do the labor yourself, will cost you about what a built 60E will cost.

The good:
You wont have to mess with the trans again for a very long time.
You are now ready for the 6.0L swap that's almost guaranteed when you get tired of the 4.8
While getting the tune modified for the 80E, swap pullies and pick up 2lbs of boost. pay for the re-tune once.

The bad:
The gearing in the 80E sucks major *** compared to the 60E so, either be prepared to feel like you lost 100hp or to spend the money on a 4.10 gear swap.
OD is not as good in the 80E, MPG will suffer a little.

The Ugly:
Now, with the added boost to make up for the 80E you will need bigger injectors, bigger fuel pump. Then of course a cam and better converter to compliment the blower and springs to match. Probably a meth kit to keep IAT's down with the added boost. The G80 rear is gonna give out so plan on an Eaton or locker and possibly a 14 bolt swap. Probably want a 3" exhaust to let that cam and blower breath. Gonna need a wide band O2, boost gauge, fuel pressure gauge, and a pod to hold them. Then pick up a tuning suite to make the tweaks to the trans shift settings and line pressure. After all this identifying the remaining weak points is just a matter of time so stash some cash away for that.

So really, the 80E swap shouldn't cost you more than $12-$15k in the end. Welcome to the addiction.

if your only 2wd the 80e will be a easy swap, lucky you. like stated above you'll have to mod your cross member or buy a after market one , not sure if you have to shorten your drive line... you might not have to a buddy of mine did a 80 swap in his 2wd crewcab and didnt have to cut it if i remember right, then connect the 2 wires to the ecu and get a longer dip stick and tube and your done . it will feel like a dog out of the hole compared to the 60 but i would never go back.

I dissagree , i love the 1st gear the 80E has, Cured my wheel hop, First gear was worthless with my 60E.

Oh and OP, i went thru 4 60e's in about a 1000 miles, 3 of them were RPM LVL 5's and the last one was my stock case with built guts/hard part s and all failed with the power this blower makes,

Still on my first 80e though! She dont miss a beat, shifts wayyyy better than that harsh shifting 60e and has proven itself in my mind. Just look at the difference in the size of the internals.
