5.3 popped at 7psi, why?

methonal is the key, easy way to add 5* of timing without any issues. probably pick up 50 hp too

no not yet. I will hopefully this winter. Ive had it to up to 14 psi at the track once and it felt pretty good. I would imagine around 550 or so. I really need a bigger turbo. The 65mm turbine is probably killing me

probably wasnt the IAT sensor either, i know in my tune stock it wont add timing until 50 degrees so the sensor didnt see that, and with that intercooler your probably 115 degrees and even though its small a short pull wont matter, smaller intercoolers just heat soak faster, now if intake temps were at 150* then i would say thats getting warm. but the fault was your tuner putting it on 17* and with 91 octane that is horrible. a methonal kit would help with octane but your need the timing much lower.
"Not even close. 17* is nowhere near "crazy" for timing with boost. Ideal is usually anywhere from 16-18* with many "idiots" out there tuning for 21-22* (and knocking, I might add). We saw 16* with 12PSI on our tahoe and I see 14-15* with 12psi on my silverado SS with 10.7:1 compression."
And yes, I had mentioned a couple times that I would run 91. So I guess I will just ask for an extra-conservative tune this time around.
If anyone has efilive and wants to look at the log/tune it is posted at the start of the thread, thanks again guys.

It sounds like you've been looking for a way to blame the tuner... 17° is not necessarily aggressive on 7psi. The more base timing you run, the more sensitive it will be to IAT increases. So its possible that 17° contributed to an earlier demise of your engine, but certainly wasn't the cause. I have run more timing than that on a 5.3 with no issues on low boost. When you say "I had mentioned a couple times that I would run 91", what exactly does that mean? Were you and your tuner not explicit in discussing what fuel you would be running? That's absolutely critical for tuning, because if he tuned for race gas or some other octane supplement and you ran it on straight 91 because you had just 'mentioned it' once or twice, its not his fault.
Sorry to play devil's advocate here, but I have seen too much **** go down that's completely in the hands of the user only to have them try to blame the tuner when their stuff breaks. Its happened to me a couple times and its not cool...

Well 17* isnt bad for 86* air.. but when your IATs are climbing but your pcm is seeing that they are dropping, it usually adds timing.. depending on how the IAT timing table is setup.
i was running 18* when i had the sts.. but it pulled timing aggressivly when the IATs started climbing.

cant blame the tuner, you hired him. your turboing an engine that wasnt designed for a turbo. when playing with fire, you sometimes get burned.
out of 100 tuners, probably 1 has a clue of whats going on.
