Default 6.0 diesel turbo on a 5.3

Does anyone have any answers for putting a 6.0 ford turbo onto my 5.3 in my 98 sonoma. I bought the turbo for 100 bucks. but I am not familiar with the diesel turbo. Only real question is the vain controler or whatever it is. any help will be great.

usually the diesel turbos are quite a bit different than gas turbos or at least the duramax turbo is quite a bit different.

My question is: Why would you want to. Even if you got it to work that turbo wouldn't neccessarily be well suited on your 5.3L and you can get a brand new MP T70 for $650 or less. The turbo isn't necessarily the most expensive part of the build. Unless you can build a turbo manifold from scratch, expect to spend at least $2000

I do alot of forum lurking around on a bunch of sites and I have yet to see anyone other than manufactures mess around with the VVT turbos, maybe Banks has done some work with them, but I am sure trying to retro fit something to control the VVT would be a waste of time.

That said I would dump that turbo and pick up something that is known to work well on your 5.3 (thats what I did) like a MPT70. If Brand new turbos are not your thing check out turbomustangs.com under the junkyard section, I hear lots of people are doing ok with holset turbos like the HX40.

Just my $.02

Most of the VNT or VVT setups are controlled by voltage using a motor in the same manner as a wastegate just more precise. I can check on the 6.0 turbo i have in the garage for what the specifics are for vane operation (not sure if its a 0-5v system or 0-12v). Manufacturers are the only ones who use them because of the emission regulations stressed upon them and the length of time it takes to perfect the codes. They can meet tighter emission tiers as well as have the power they need when using them. I would bet you could use HP Tuners to design a RPM based output hooked to the turbo, but would have to play around with the activation. PM me and i'll see what i can dig up for ya.

it is a 0-12v solenoid. applying power to it makes the vanes close so it will act as a smaller turbo. after the turbo spools the vanes open up to get rid of the restriction. it is also a fine line how far to open them cause ford also uses this to limit boost.

wouldn't something along the lines of an inverse of the TPS signal work? I really have no idea what I am talking about, but when I read the OP, thats what initially came to mind.

I was told that the VGT on those turbos was actuated by a pulse width modulated solenoid that changed oil pressure and moved the vanes. I am also thinking about installing this turbo in a front mount setup. I was given one of these turbos for free so I plan to give it a shot.

Leonpiper69, How far have you gone on your build? Did you have any luck with a potentiometer
