Ball Bearing Vs. Journal Bearing....Differences

I had problems with 2 non-watercooled journal bearing turbo's from Turbonetics... turbine side got real hot. I upgraded to watercooled journal bearing probably a year and half ago or more... no more issues. Others have had good luck with non-watercooled journal bearing turbos with no problems. IMO, BB is not necessary for the street...

What does it cost to rebuild a standard, journal bearing turbo? Does it have to be rebalanced? All this rebuild talk got me looking into the costs for rebuilding a BB Turbo if one of mine ever fail. Garrett has an BB CHRA Service program that you turn your unit into an authorized Garrett Performance Center, they inspect it and it runs about $500 for a new CHRA (center section, tubine and compressor wheels fully balanced) with a new warranty. Not cheap but better than buying a new one ($900+).
