Default belt tensioner question

2000 5.3. just installed V1 supercharger on it. Fired it up on the test stand and the belt tensioner is moving like crazy. Doesnt seem right to me. Pulleys are all perfect and it doesnt throw the belt etc. I have a new Dayco on there, but to me the tension just isnt strong. I know the cheap Dayco belt is stretching like crazy. I have a Gates and a Goodyear Gatorback on order to see if they are any better. I have video if anyone would like to see what I am referring to. Does anybody know of a heavy duty tensioner? The one I need is the 3 bolt one that bolts to the waterpump. All the searching I have done seems to refer to the single bolt A/C tensioner.

Thoughts?

Also I have tried 2 different sizes of belts and the results are pretty much the same.

Looks about normal to me.

Here are a couple to compare. Remember you are spiking the throttle also. The last one really moves. Mine moves a decent amount on my setup. You are also running a 6 rib belt which does stretch more. I notice less movement from mine when I started running a 8 rib setup.

Thanks for the videos. That helped a lot. Looks like I will just try the new belts and see how it runs. I'm still about a month away from putting it in the airboat. Thanks again!

The stock belt tensioners are not the strongest, just a FYI. Although with that setup your options are limited I believe for a stronger one. As long as the belt stays on then you should be fine. Optimal belt length will place the tensioner in the mid point of its travel when the engine is off. If the belt is too long or too short then the tensioner will hit the stops on accel or decel and it will break at some point.

yeah that seems normal to me. i know when i bought a not good belt to get the right size it stretched like crazy. im running a gates hd green belt on there now and its much better. you can get the hd tensioner but it gets costly at about $400. thats going to be one bad *** air boat!

Good point, not sure what size belt you are running but if you can get a Gates HD green belt it will help. Post up your size or look in the FI section sticky on belt sizes to see if there is a HD belt available in your size.

on the note of the hd belt sizes they dont offer as many in 6 rib. my belt size had a big gap at 6 rib so i bought an 8 rib and made a cute little 2 rib belt by cutting if off with a razor blade haha. works perfectly fine
