Are you doing your own tuning James? Why program do you use?

I've been tuning it myself for a few years with TunerCat OBD-II. It still has the original black-box PCM. I've got two brand new 411's sitting here that I would like to install EFI Live's Custom 2-Bar O/S onto for use with this engine. The black box runs a 2-bar MAP right now bu I've had to spoof and compensate in a lot of table to get that to work. Would be nice to have native 2-Bar support.

I have high expectations for this. The pulley on the W140AX is 3" diameter, same one that came stock with the original Whipple kit. I don't even know what to expect for boost really but I'm hoping it's about 10 or 11psi. We have VP Street Blaze 100 on tap at work so I've always got the option of dropping pulley sizes for some weekend fun. I've got four to choose from between 3 and 2.5".

James B.,
What kind of boost did you get out of the old setup with the 2.5" pulley? Any idea at
how much hp the smaller compressor (1.6) is good for on the 350? (ET or dyno #'s?)
Thanks,
James

I ran the 1.6L compressor with the 2.5" pulley on the 350 with the stock cam and with the Crower 00401LM cam. The stock cam with the E-Tec 200 heads made 9psi boost. The 00401 cam made 8psi but the difference in the top end was huge. The drop in boost was due to obviously more flow with longer duration and greater lift, all that means more air. The best time run with the 350 was a 14.26@95, but that was with the Whippletronics, no tuning, stock cam, and miniature exhaust. (Excuses... I know...) I haven't been back to the track since early 2003.
Of course this 6000-pound heap moves around a lot better now but I've got no numbers to support it. Officially, therefore, it runs low 14's. With the 1.6L compressor and all the mods listed in my Sig except the 383, I could estimate horsepower at about 500 based on the injector duty cycle values I was seeing. That was 8psi boost.
The exact same setup with the 1.6L compressor on the 383 only makes 6psi boost but flows so much more air and makes so much more power that it will max out the MAF sensor below 50 degrees air temps at WOT. I estimate the 383 at 550HP based on injector duty cycle, 6psi boost.

The new setup should yield 11psi on the 383. I have water/methanol injection if I need to use it but will try first without. This will be 91 octane pump gas only. (H2O/meth is fine for hot days but if your boost levels depend on it all the time to prevent detonation you're asking too much from the engine in my opinion.) The extra 5psi will be worth at least 100HP more. I'm thinking 650 which is why I have a feeling I will need to upgrade my injectors. (41lbs/hr.) I have a selection of pullies from 2.5" to 3" and can use them with VP Racing Gas. Right about the point where you hit 14psi boost you can expect 2HP per cubic inch. I haven't seen it done on a completely stock HT383 crate yet so I don't even know if it can even hold that much. I will probably find the answer myself at some point in the future.
