cats on a blown motor
Ok guys,
I cant handle the smell of a cammed catless car anymore, maybe im getting old LOL but yes so whats the solution?
I saw a metal cat get clogged so badly it freaked the crap out of me, im thinking a super highflow ceramic cat might be a good idea, THAT or I found 5" 100cell metal cats that reduce to 3" at the inlet/outlet.
The 5" cats will have a much larger flow area vs a smaller one, but how do I prevent the cat from killing itself, does a super rich fuel mixture kill a cat, or a lean mixture, meth, race gas or what exactly?

How do you have your exhaust setup, is your tune dialed in, and how is your PCV setup? I would assume that if you had a rich air/fuel mixture and/or if your motor is using any oil that it could have a negative effect on the cats over a long period of time but I'm not positive.

Cats are a terrible Idea with Forced Induction/Nitrous... that's the bottom line, Get your tune up spot on at idle or even lean it out a little to try and get rid of the smell, Also consider running your exhaust out the back if it's not already.

I have the same problem in my truck. Although i'm N/A, the fuel smell is very strong at idle. I've heard that lowering the idle timing helps with the smell, but I didn't notice a difference. Also I'm idling at stoich, I've never leaned idle out to see if it would make a noticeable difference.

ok what are the big horsepower supercars doing as far as cats? There are more than a few 1000+ cars out there, and ALOT of 600+ hp cars running cats from the factory, why arent they melting? My ZR1 had cats, never had problems, so the question is, what part of forced induction kills the cats, is it the highly rich fuel mixtures, or meth or what exactly?

I would say carbon buildup is the biggest enemy. Mine is idling at stoich and still smells strong. I'd like to order the 1 7/8" ARH headers with the cats but I'm afraid they'll just plug up so I'm not sure what to do either.

I've got a couple thousand miles on $60 magnaflow cats. There are "race" cats but they are really expensive. My cats are past the end of the trans for reference of how far from the motor. No problems so far. My tuner told me don't be surprised if I blow them out but for 120 invested I won't complain. Btw 2 3" cats and spintech mufflers vs open headers has no hp change. Btw I drive with hearers only a lot and don't get much any smell
