No matter how you look at it, the 6.0l swap is the best way to go, trust me!! You're lookin at around 1000.00 or so to have the 6.0 and it will be stronger, faster, and better all around for what you're trying to do!!!If you build the 5.3 the frist thing you need to do is make sure you know someting about internal engine builds!! If you dont then there's your $1000.00's right there in labor to have someone tear it down for you. Now if you cracked the cylinder then it's almost positive that you received a slight bit of wall damage. Which means now you have to take it to a mchine shop to smooth any little tiny scars out of the wall to prevent detonation again, oh thats anywhere from 500-1000 dependin on where you go!!! Now that number 7 has been slightly bored to fix the scar in the walls, you have to buy some piston rings that fit the bore more correctly, not much but still adds to your costs! Then if you still don't have alot of knowledge in engine assembly then here's another 800-1000 bucks to have a shop rebuild it for you!! Just listen to these guys about the 6.0l, they've all done very similar projects to what you have and every single one of them agrees that a 6.0 would've saved time, money, effort, and headaches!!

I have been where you have been, I was going to replace the piston that broke until I found another cracked. I'm O.K with replacing one piston but if two are cracked they all need to be replaced IMO. and why replace them with stock weak pistons? Custom FI pistons will set you back about 800 to 1000 bucks, plus all parts needed to install.
You could find a 5.3 for that much. My total bill was going to bearound 3500 bucks to build up a pretty good 5.3.
I took the 6.0 route it cost 2,000 and I'm happy with my choice. all thow the fuel mileage with the 6.0 does suck!
It is up to you but two things you got to think about.
1. How much are you willing to spend.
2. What are your plans later on? More power? or are you happy with you'r current set-up? reliabilty a issue?
One thing to think about is the turbo. I'lll bet it is fine (if you still have your cats) but if you go to a 6.0 a bigger turbo might be in order. not needed but would help.also
