At what boost/power levels do you guys recommend getting head studs on a 5.3L? I'm going to be running a 70-76mm turbo, looking for 500-600 rwhp from my mostly stock 5.3L motor. Only other major engine mod will be a turbo cam. I know head studs would be a good idea, but I've read of people getting crazy boost on stock head bolts and gaskets.

I'd recommend at least getting ARP head bolts for those goals. If the budget allows it, I prefer the head studs>head bolts, just because I think the fine threads on the nut, plus the fact that you're torquing a nut on a stud, make the torque reading more accurate.

There's no reason not to use studs, other than price. But you'd have to throw quite a lot of boost to start lifting the heads, so I wouldn't lose any sleep just using bolts.

I hope 14 psi and 16.5degrees timing on 93 and meth is not to much, but it sure is FUN...

Awaiting feedback on this thread. I'll add to your question. Why would it be bad to inch up the boost until it weeped a lil. Then back it down some. It is just a gasket you are talking about replacing anyway???

or you could pull a couple degrees of timing and see what happens.


Im planning on doin Studs when i take the heads off for new lifters.

but usually most people see heads lifting at 15psi roughly..

What about head gaskets? Anything special to run to avoid blowing them out? I keep hearing about LS9 gaskets.

LS9's were designed for boost and they hold up well. plus they are pretty cheap.

I hope you are a lil off on that 15 psi thing. I was planning on atleast 15 in my cam only truck. I would love to hear the guys setups and specs on those that pushed at 15psi.Not saying it did not happen, I would just like to know what engine, psi, fuel, and what spark was used.?

Ive always heard and read 15psi as well. Im supprised you didnt just do it before you put the motor in Rodney, thats what I would have done.
