How much boost will a 5.3 take

I would argue that there isn't a good answer, but the suggestions above seem pretty good. I would also be more concerned with how much power you want, rather than how much boost you should run.

if I were in your place , I would start with 8-10 psi and grow 2psi at a time to see if any problems accure , and also to perfect the tune and see if you get any fuel problems to fix them while you have alot less boost so problems like knock or fuel will cause less to no damage

Well I'm not the guy installing the kit or the fuel system. My cousins shop 510 Race Engineering is and I'm sure the tuner will start off with less boost and progress to what I disire. Thanks for the advice though man I appreciate it

i can almost assure you that the short block isnt the weak link... with a solid tune it will live far beyond what you would expect. like 30+ psi..... that is of course assuming you dont have some super awesome heads on there that flow 360cfm!
the only time i have ever hurt a motor, whether it be a burnt piston or head gasket is tune related. ive made more pulls than i can count over 25psi though

lol, nah... im just stupid enough to put that kind of boost to my motors!
and just to make everyone feel all warm and fuzzy inside about LS motors... the 5.3 that in my truck right now i bought for $50 off craigslist, i dont have a clue how many miles are on it, i brought it home and sprayed it down (inside and out) with engine degreaser then pressure washed it, re used my old LS9 head gaskets and it was running strong on 18psi for a few days before my trans decided it didnt want to work anymore
