Your 98 probably had a C clip 14 bolt, like my 2000 does. I can take a picture for reference if you want.

Never had it apart... so I would assume you are correct. My 98 Z71 was considered a "heavy" half ton... also had one more leafspring than did the "standard" Z71's. This was probably a prelude to the "1500 HD". I should have never gotten rid of that truck... in the 5 years I had it I went through 3 batteries and one alternator... thats it. Batteries don't last long down here in hell.

I actually never thought about the half ton 14 bolt as an option... certainly more beefy than the 10 bolt (G80) I have now. I was thinking about contacting Moser on perhaps a Dana 60 but that was WAY down the road. I may have to rethink my options (currently dreams). Right now I am seriously considering a 4L85 swap. I want to get the drivetrain setup and out of the way prior to adding more power. That means a better tranny... and MUCH better brakes. I'll probably slap in a Eaton diff if my G80 goes South too soon but I would rather only spend money on the diff once...

Here's a link to some pics I took, the top row is the axle stuff. The rounder diff is the C clip (I think) without the hub flanges. The diff with the more square housing has the black wheels and the hub flange.
