Default OK lets talk powerdyne

now i know all the horror stories.. my friend had this or 10 yrs ago this happened..

lets talk personal experience.. who HAS ONE NOW or has recently..

what did you think?? what was your over all perception..

tell me how you really feel

show me some comparisons.. powerdynevs vortech.. similar combos..

heres what i'm thinking for my truck..

its a BONE stock 5.3 i would be going with a powerdyne at about 7-9 psi and maybe a 50 shot for fun..

it has stock exhaust.. just looking for a little something extra.. the 150 shot is killing the trans and i'm tired of filling bottles..

I've been running a Powerdyne for over a year now. It's "eh" at best. When it was originally installed I saw a gain of 29.1%.....yawn. If I hadn't gotten the the whole kit for so cheap I would have gone another route, and still intend to find a replacement form of boost. PTE is next inline methinks.

One of the big Powerdyne marketing points is that a belt driven s/c is cooler. I've recorded IAT's at 113* on a 25* day. Temps in Fahrenheit. You could imagine what that would be like on a hot day. Hot temps and parasitic drain, sweet.

The quality of the kit:
The dryer duct tube that came with the kit is a joke. It takes almost nothing to wear a hole in it which is wonderful for the Maf sensor.

It leaked where the by-pass valve is connected, both ends. Which was cured with a radiator repair kit.
It leaks at where the IAT sensor plugs in.
The quality of the pulley on the head unit is in question. It wore down awful fast and I got a lot of belt slippage. So I'd tighten it down some more, which caused the front bearing to go prematurely. I can't tell you how many brands of belts I went through before it dawned on me to try a different pulley from another vendor.

I sent my stuporcharger in to an alternative place instead of sending it back to Powerdyne for warranty work. Which I understand that anytime you deal with customer service there is no warranty work. If there is a flaw in the product, it's your fault. In the rare occasion that the 3year warranty is indeed honored, it may be a month of two, or longer, before it's serviced and returned to you. The place I sent mine into for repair had it back to me in a week and a half.

Basically, the dyne isn't terribly efficient, blows hot air, and on some vehicle it's hard to intercool. Water\methanol might be the best and cheapest bet to control excessive temps and add some additional performance.

It doesn't have a lot of room to grow. I rarely see anyone run more than 10lbs on a Dyne. I did see on goofy fella run a 12lb pulley. The impeller didn't last long. Very bad.

It is quiet little snot, it has it's own belt to run the s/c, so if it fails you can just yank the belt and be on your way.

Pics of where it leaked on my truck

As I mentioned above, I used a radiator repair kit to repair a couple of leaky locations. Plus I used some 3" exhaust tube and modified it so I could connect the by-pass and have a proper way to mount a nitrous nozzle.

I have had mine for over 2 years now.
I read the same **** posted on other boards of about how bad this unit was.
if you really read the statements the one posting also stated how he killed the
head unit doing **** the unit was not designed to do.
some of it was funny how the unit was blamed for what the person did to it.
some call it no power, peace of ****, buy something better like a vortec or
procharger.
what is really odd is that i came across a magazine article posted on the web
where they did a test, the tested units were pro charger, vortec, paxton, powerdyne,
and one other I cannot think of that were centrifuge superchargers.
when the test were done it came out procharger, powerdyne, vortec, the one i can
not think of and then finally paxton coming up last.

the only reason procharger came on top was to the fact of it's intercooler.
cooler air makes more power but the powerdyne came on sooner and built up
boost pressure faster.
now i know allot of guys will come on here and start talking **** about vortec,
how it is better, and blah blah blah.
Hey I did not make the article I only read it.
now not inclined on throwing money away, i decided to take a peace of so called ****
and make it better.
i have gone as far as modding the head unit, modding the belt system, modding the air intake system,
going as far as hooking up an intercooler system for it.
so far i am the only one running a powerdyne for over 2 years with more then 60,000 miles
on the head unit and happy the way my truck runs.
Has it ever gone out on me?
Yes, lost a small bearing before a get to gather.
and snapped the internal belt trying to find out why a pressure difference
from be for intercooler to after intercooler, where i learned 2.5 inch pipe did not flow
like 3 inch pipe.
I blame my self for this because I did not ask anyone on the board for help.
Photos of my work.

So Pappy...Is all your intake tubing 3"? Intercooler inlet and outlet 3"? What is the size of your intercooler core? I think that is going to be my next mod.

PappyDan, looks like you've put in a lot of work and made a clean system. You ever think about putting a scoop beneath the bumper for your intercooler? Seems like it might help alot with the airflow. Nice work though.
