Default procharger question

a friend of mine told me that if i get a procharger i should keep my stock rearend gears because it will keep the gears long and allow for boost to build. ok, i understand how this would work for an actual turbo, but is this true for a procharger? i wouldn't think so since it is belt ran. what do ya'll think?

also what specs should i look for in a cam with forced induction?

With a supercharger, boost is based on engine rpm. The faster you can spin your engine, the faster you can hit the higher boost. For a supercharger I'd opt for deeper gears. You don't have to go to wild on cam selections with a blower. A 216/220 or a 218/222 with a 114lsa at 110* centerline would be a good choice.

Cam selection will also depend on what engine, head work, how much boost.
A centrifugal charger like the Procharger likes big cams. I was running a smaller 216/218 cam, I switched to a larger cam and picked up a little over 70rwhp with nothing different than the cam and of course tuning for the new cam.

What are your goals and what other mods do you have now and plan to run?

i have no head work and a 5.3 motor. i would like to have about 7 or 8 psi of boost. what setup do you suggest? i like the choppy idle so a bigger cam sounds great. my goal would be high 300 hp/torque to the wheels (but more isn't bad)

The base Procharger kit should make around 8-9 psi and will put you into the mid to upper 300 rwhp easy.
What year truck? You will need 42 pound/hr injectors, upgraded fuel pump or boost a pump and a good tune. You can hit your goal no problem without swapping cams.

The blower kit should come with the boost pump in it. If you're going to go ProCharger (which I highly recommend you do) spend the 300 bucks extra and get the D-1SC instead of the P-1SC. Because if you want to switch down the line it costs 1500 to upgrade from the P1 to the D1, and the D1 kit has a much better inner cooler as well. Plus I know that the D1 kit with 10-12 psi on a stock 4.8L 4WD Auto makes 460-475 rwhp. All you have to do to hold the power is upgrade to ARP rod bolts, they're like $100. I'm getting ready to do a heads cam D1 setup on a Regency in the near future it should be pretty strong. But as stated above you want a good tune not absolutely do not scrimp on the tune that's the most important part. 42# inj. are a must as well

The biggest diff. I notice with the procharger was putting in a stall. Lit up the tires from a standstill and made boost much quicker!
