what causes f/i setups to overheat?

Sorry to somewhat steal your thread moregrip, but hopefully we can get a solution together as i'm havin a similar situation as you...
Zippy, in my truck at partial throttle and the 0vac/boost region I am seeing 29-32* of timming is that too low or too high. PE comes in at 105kpa and slowly ramps in with boost. As boost goes up, PE goes down. at 5psi I see full PE of 11.22 AFR. Between 0 and 5 psi of boost, PE goes from 13.5 and ramps down to 11.22 AFR.Once boost comes in steady and PE is active, my timing ramps down from said 29-30* down to 22* @5psi and 18*@10PSI and 15-16* @15 pounds. What else in the tune could possibly be causing my truck to see increased coolent temps. Lastly I am going to replace the exhaust housing to a larger one to see if that help out also. TIA
Honestly the most common problem I've ran into and fixed is a tuning issue. Many are tuned with too little timing in the non-boost/low boost range and this will easily cause overheating conditions. Even with the stock stat it should be fine. I'd run a 160 in your setup for various reasons, but not to keep it from overheating. Seriously, check the timing you run at cruise and zero to very low boost situations. Also make sure that when you are in boost you are going into p.e., because if you don't this will also create a ton of heat in the cylinders. Heat in the cylinders will be transmitted to the cooling system.
Something else to consider would be change the heat exchanger and get it out of the way of the radiator. I've also re-located them for this reason. There are many other options for this.
On a side note, turning on the fans at highway speed will slow down the air coming through the radiator, not speed it up. Only an engine driven style fan can get away with it since it speeds up as you speed up. Have you upgraded your fans to both 7 blade setup for low speed help?

Thats a pretty good amount of timing for that amount of boost...are you running meth or e85?
