open is you are relying on your VE table and mAF to do the air calcs to get proper fueling. (loooong story short) SInce you are 2bar SD, you are only relying on your VE table for air calcs. Closed is the PCM makes adjustments to fueling as per readings from the front narrowband sensors.

with a 160 stat you need to change your oil more often. since the engine doesnt get as hot you do build up more condensation inside, this is the same for all makes and models- forced induction or NA

when i had the stock 190 in my grand national 3000 mile mobile one looked great when i changed it, when i had the 160 stat in it it looked a little nasty, so i started changing at 2000 miles

Not true. I put mine in and tuned for it, then went out and checked mileage. It didnt make a damn bit of difference. I think if you put one in and dont tune for it then mileage will suffer some. But if you increase timing etc. to take advantage of the cooler temps then all seems well.

Oh and the LS engines dont seem to want to run at 160 even with a 160 stat, mine runs at like 175 on the highway and 180 in traffic. This is common.

What rad do you have Dewey? I have never seen mine get above 185 in 90+ heat and in traffic with the air on.....

Keep in mind, it's not gonna run at 160*, it will still run at what ever is operating for ya. It will just stay open more or all the time. In the 90* plus weather I hover around 189 to 198 temps with the 160stat. I guess that means mine is always open huh?

nonnie you are in SD but are you open loop? If you are closed loop what is your closed loop enable temp?

Smaller, 28" or whatever the heck the small one is. I certainly believe anybody running your temps or below 180 in summer heat has huge resevoir of coolant, ie 3x" radiator.

Again this thread is like any other that asks how much you gain from a certain mod. Tons of different applications, tons of opinions, little bit of facts, and lots of different experiences. What one monkey gets out of it, the next might not due to different enviroments/mechanical applications/radiator sizes/pullies on the blowers/turbos in engine bay/ you get the point. It's great discussion though.
