Yea, I haven't really found a weakness in mine yet. Ford got it right this time. They hit the mark several years back with the 7.3 Powerstroke and did it again with the Ecoboost. In my opinion this the best gas motor Ford has ever built. More than reasonable power and MPG too.

A couple months ago we took it up to Fort Worth Tx to pick up the Hoe in my avatar. Plenty of interstate 75-80 mph driving and plenty of hills. I was driving on the way there and my wife was driving on the way back. We averaged 19.3mpg for the entire trip.

It may be the larger tires & leveling kit thats putting you at 12-16mpg. A guy I go to church with has a 2011 4x4 with 3.73 gears and is completely stock and he claims roughly the same mpg as mine with the 3.55 gears.

Seriously, in your case you may be better off with the Dmax, at least then you would have the monster torque. I had a 99' 7.3 powerstroke and there just ain't much that compares to the power/torque of a diesel.

I picked up a 13 Ecoboost a couple months ago. I really like the low end torque for towing. The best bet for tuning is Roush as they'll pick up the 3/36 warranty.

Other than a few with timing chain issues, most of the EB's have been pretty trouble free.
