having issues with fuel sending unit and pump in tank ...should i go outside tank ?

hey guys ...Noobie here but been a GM man all my life...question 1-my 1989 gmc 1500 was originally a TBI well over the years it hyas become a carb. motor ...muy question is can i pipe in my stock fuel sending unit and pump to my carb ? or do i need an electrical pump ? i have no other issues but that...please give a dog a bone ...been fighting this to long

I took the pump off of the housing and put a piece of instrument air line in its place for a pick up tube with a sock filter on the end and put it back in the tank,then ran my fuel line to a mechanical pump on the engine and plugged off the return line.haven't cranked it yet but pretty sure it will work.
