Question about rail plumbing for return conversion

None of this fuel system stuff made sense to me until seeing these pictures lol. Question...for a dead head system which I guess would be the easiest way to convert a returnless to return, do you have to use a regulator like this MSD Boost Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulators 2938 - Free Shipping on Orders Over $99 at Summit Racing or could a non boost reference one work also?

I was reading up on a few fuel system threads about the returnless systems and if you have a 03+ Truck with returnless why couldn't you just buy the older return fuel rail and run a return line the the tank?

What are the issues with doing this or is it just that simple? I guess you'd need to add a FPR if you're running a bigger pump, 03+ sending unit/line junction thingy that all the lines come into outside the tank, and run a return line to the tank, but how hard could that be? Instead if reinventing the wheel.
