Angry $%$&@ Drum Brakes

My driverside rear keep locking up on me, brakes look fine, While coasting in traffic it will start to lunge, and i can hear a squeak everytime my rim makes a revolution, speeds above 30 it isnt noticeable. When i go to slow down, it will do it again with a popping sound, get home, drum is blazing hot, finally get it off, adjust the brakes down, drum goes on fine, and no more seize or sounds for a day, and then it will do it again......im about to snap

I agree, i actually get embarrassed when someone rides in my truck and I have to get down on the brakes good. All the shuddering and shaking.

What I cannot grasp is how my 2007 nnbs 1500 work truck and the 3 others just like it at work that also have drums stop smooth as silk.

I wish GM would pay the 1000 dollars for a different axle with disk brakes. 100000 mile powertrain warranty should include shitty engineering.

Let me do some checking but there is a revised star adjust out that is supposed to make the brakes not self adjust up so tight. Basically its the same adjust with every other tooth removed. On the Colorado's they had this same sort of bulletin but GM would only provide one adjust and the tech. had to modifiy the other to match. You could do that easy enough with a cut off wheel. Just grind/cut every other tooth off the adjusters. FWIW I put the revised adjusters on my dads 05 and it seemed to help. He quite complaining about it anyway.

"In rare cases some owners may comment on a concern with the rear brakes wearing out prematurely, dragging, getting hot or being aggressive. This may be due to the rear brake shoes being adjusted too tight"

"To correct this concern replace the star adjuster with a new 15 teeth adjuster (original is 30 teeth) part number 19133371. The same part number is used on both sides, requiring two per vehicle.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed."

I have absolutely no idea how much they cost. My dads truck was still in warranty when I put the adjusters on it.

Wonder if that symptom is contagious. My '86 Silvy started doing that earlier this year. Gotta practically mash the accelerator to get moving, but once that's done, no problem 'til the next day. Hadn't had the issue yesterday when I drove it. Of course, the fluid is old, and needs to be flushed out (I think).

I had a drum split years ago that behaved like that. But inspection of the drum as you have would have shown it.

WoW! I absolutely love my 05's brakes. 45k and it's a stopping ***** with no probs.
@ 45k it's time to give them a look and I'll have to note the stars tooth count.
I did cook the OE rotors through abuse but the Raybestos Advance Technology rotors are taking all I can toss at them.

Sorry to hear the troubles.
