Default 05 Drum to Disc

I did a few searches and was unable to find anything. Has anyone removed the rear drum brakes on an 05 Truck and replace with disc?

Most of the '05 owners seem to think the drums work better.

General motors seems to think that the drums are better! Unless you are upgrading to bigger/ better disc brakes, I'd personally leave them alone. They (GM) claim that in a study they did, the drum brakes performed better and we're cheaper to maintain ( as well as manufacture of course).

Don't get me wrong, I think they work great. The disc brakes look better behind an aftermarket wheel than those drums.

Then why not go back to 4 wheel drums, Then we will be completley back to 60's technology. G.M. can do a "study" all they want but if they want to sell drums then of course they will tell you the drums performed better.

Just my $0.02 - And by the way, I love my rear disc on my 00 GMC.

My 05 stops a lot faster than my 04 with discs. Wife wouldn't drive the 04 but now she wants to drive the 05. Go figure.

You guys do know that the rear brakes only account for <20% of your braking right?

Yes discs are more asthetically pleasing, but drums are quite capable themselves especially in the role of rear brakes where it's use is minimized and heat is not an issue.

i'm curious to see how long these new 05 brakes last, 99-04 with 4 discs have held up to lots of miles without changing pads or rotors, my 98 with the disc/drum setup had terrible brake life from factory.

In my 01 my rear discs only lasted 28k miles. I never heard the wear indicator so I ended up having to get new pads and discs. Hopefully the drums last longer. The GM disc design was kinda crappy on the back and they picked up a lot of crap off of the road which shortened their life.
