Default 05 rear drums to 04 rear rotors

How hard would it be to convert ffrom rear drums to rear rotors?
What extra parts would be needed? I can buy a whole rear brake setup for 85 bucks, would this be a worth while upgrade?

Thanks,

D

In my opinion, no. GM's rear discs have too many issues.

Nbs suv rears are awesome...seen them last 80k plus. Best bang for the buck imo is hydro with 06 fronts and either single or dual piston disk rears...

Depends what state you live in whether or not you will like NBS disk brakes. Rust belt states the disks did not last, backing plates rusted out and fell off, rear rotors had severe rust issues with a very small friction area in a short amount of time.

I believe they switched to drums to help remedy this issue.

But in non-rust belt states like tx or az I don't see the disks being an issue.

Honestly I wish my truck had rear drums.

As far as difficulty, you pretty much have to disassemble the entire rear in order to swap everything over. And using the drum axle will put the calipers at a different position than they were mounted at on the disc brake trucks. Yes it can be, and has been done. Would be easier to buy an axle and parking brake assembly/cables from an older truck with the disc setup. Then you will also have to change the proportioning valve (drums operate at different pressures than discs).

So can it be done? Yes. Is it worth it? Thats up to you. After driving both, I must agree that the 05+ setup feels much better than previous. But then again I'd like to try the 05+ with the disc's from a tahoe that uses the dual piston rear caliper and see how that feels.

In the end the main gain you will get is aesthetic in that discs look better than drums behind larger wheels (my whole reason for considering a swap myself)

Its pretty easy. you show up at my house and i swap rear ends with you. I want drums to run 15" drag tires.

Would '06 fronts swap directly onto my '99?

Yes with calipers, caliper brackets, and rotors.
