Default 160 thermostat versus trans cooler

what kind of trans temps. do you see with a cooler compared to a lower thermostat? Was thinking of swapping my thermostat with a 160 and going with a 93 tune. But was curious about the difference in temps.

A thermostat is for the engine, a trans cooler does what it sounds like it does.

But yes, I recently installed a 40k Tru Cool trans cooler onto my truck and I LOVE IT. I use to see 174 degrees on my trans doing 65 in 114 degree heat, now I barely see over 150 doing 65 in the same heat. Its well worth the money and should allow the trans to last longer since it always runs cooler.

But I also do have a 160 stat in my truck, but it doesn't run exactly 160 (you should know this) no need to change a tune when doing a stat (what I was told) but I have both and find the trans cooler a NEED on a truck in hot weather.

Default 160 thermostat

yes i know you do not need to tune with a lower thermostat, but with lower temp. you can run a more aggressive tune. (what ive been told) But running lower temp. for the engine should lower the trans temp. right

Your factory trans cooler is on the cool side of the radiator so trans temps shouldn't change much.

Actually you should tune for the cooler stat, or you may find that your fuel economy goes into the pooper, since the factory tables are enriched as the engine temp is cooler.

I have both a 160* stat and a TruCool 40k trans cooler, and the cooler is much more effective at lowering trans temps. Actually, I plan to eventually go back to a factory stat, or split the difference with a 180* stat, after research that I've done and the intended operating temp of the GENIII/IV engines.

BTW, a 160* stat starts to open at 160*, and is usually fully open around 175ish. On a hot day, the engine will still heat up to the same temp as a 195* stat, as determined by either electric fan settings or clutch fan operation. I've logged my temps with 160, 180, and the factory 195* stat, and all of them would get up to 197-200 after enough driving on a hot summer day, the 160* stat just took longer to get there. My favorite thing about the cooler stat is how quickly the heat comes up in the winter, since the antifreeze is circulation sooner

Answer me this Billy, since the heater hoses come from the water pump, and it is always circulating coolant while the engine is running, why would a cooler thermostat cause the heater to warm up faster?
