Default 1998 4l80e

Well I have found a solid 4L80E core to start my swap with. The unit itself has low miles but it just had its 10th birthday and its 100% stock and in good working order. Is this year one of the transmissions we've been upgrading to around here?

At the very least I'm going to take it to a local shop and have it gone thru and a shift kit and better frictions put in. But if my funds are right, it will be sent to FLT for their level 4 build. Vince, I know we talked about this not too long ago but what could you do this build for using this core? Gimme a call or a PM, I've had a ton of mess iin my brain with working 90+hrs a wk and putting together a motor build on top of that.

What have some of you guys done with your 80E builds/swaps? This thing will be behind the new motor in my sig with about 15psi. Shooting for as close to 700rwhp as I can get...

You might just need to go to a super cased 'glide Colton... That 4.hate is lethal on transmissions

either it is or my tuning is lol. I figure bigger tranny plus new builder plus segment swap will either fix it, or put me in a big clusterfuk. lol.

Yeah, that's why I'm reluctant to go with anyone besides FLT since I've had such good luck with this 65E. Hopefully this transmission will be the last one that ever goes in this thing... Probably going to go ahead and drop the cash on a nice converter too.... I know 80 stalls are spendy.

98 is what I just put in mine. I know we did red clutches and a couple of updates. I'll ask my tranny guy, it's still at his shop but that's another issue.........

Really almost the same as a 4L60E, at least when it comes to triple disc converters.

My 4L80E is from a 96 model and I put it in with just a shift kit and not really knowing the true story behind it and got along fine for a month. The transmission has 130k miles on it and was behind a mighty 6.5 diesel. Problem is the AFL valve has some wear and needs the rebore kit transgo offers. That and the TCC valve and a new EPC will be put in tomorrow. Other then that absolutely no issues with my 4L80E.

LOL!
There are professionals on here that *KNOW* these transmissions, I just have happened to have built one and have an ATSG manual.

1997 and 1998 versions of the 4L80-E have certain parts in the geartrain specific to them - center cupport, sun gear shaft, sun gear.
It was in 1999 there were major changes to the geartrain. 99 and higher 4L80-E's have 10% thicker planetary gears and wide manual-second band. (There are specific parts to support these upgades that are different from previous years.)
In 2001 the roller clutch in the overdrive was redesigned with rollers held captive in little blocks to allign the rollers. The change was done to prevent the scewing of the rollers that would ultimately lead to overdrive failure. This entire assembly can be retrofitted into older 4L80-E. In the 2001 and newer design the rollers are a smaller diameter than the previous design, some building prefer the larger rollers of the old design believing they can hold more power. I had a 2000 unit and upgraded the OD to the 2001 design because I felt the changes were a good improvment. The 1999 geartrain updates can be retrofitted into a 97-98 case too.
There are plenty of upgraded clutches available for the 4L80-E since they're the same as what in the TH400 for gears 1, 2, and 3. Raybestos makes performance clutches for the overdrive. The only clutch packs that need "performance" attention int he 4L80-E are the Forward, the Intermediate, the Direct, and the Overdrive clutches. For the overdrive overruns and the two bands stock replacements are fine - most times these show no wear anyway unless the trans was downshifted manually a lot or just abused.
If you install a TransGo shift kit, follow the instructions for drilling the feed holes until you get to the overdrive. On 4th. drill it one size bigger than it tells you to for the level selected. That's my opinion...
