Default 261 transfer case: Can drive without front shaft ?

Front differential is making horrendous noises, and is about to grenade, drained the sludge, about a month ago, and filled with synthetic 75W-90.. noise has since got even worse. Even screeching in 2WD position.
Is it possible to remove front drive shaft and still go down the road, or will transfer case blow lubricant out ?
