Default 4 Wheel Drive Problem, NO LOW RANGE (Vid)

OK, this is my Dad's 2002 1500HD. The 4WD low range is very picky about engaging. There has never been a Service 4WD light or anything, and it has done this for about 2 years. My dad swerars that it depends on the Transmision Temp. He says if it is past half way to the 1st mark on the guage, it WILL NOT engage. When you try, it makes a VERY LOUD clunking noise twice (as heard in the vid) and then goes back to high range 4wd. I dont understand, because if you let the truck sit untill the temop is below that mark he said, it goes in just as smooth as butter, but if its not, you can try and try and try, and just CLUNK! And that CLUNK shakes the entire truck.
ANY HELP??

Shift in or out of 4x4 low range with the engine not running. Turn the key to "on" and then try it. What you are experiencing is common, and this always works.

I've tried it. And I've tried it with the vehicle rolling just a little also, no luck.

Here it is when the guage is cooler. The truck only made one trip to town (half mile) when I did this video. Low range works fine.
