I saw that a while back. They used one on the Horsepower TV show. I think it's pretty cool, then I got sticker shock. Like 2500 bucks.

so it turnes your 4 speed into an 8 speed. sounds sweet but the price tag isn't

The problem is that it doesn't help your gear ratios. It splits them instead of multiplying them (meaning that in 1st gear, you can have either 3.06 or 1.53 with the 4L60E, or 2.48 or 1.24 with the 80E). I think James B. is running one in his Tahoe (with 4.56 gears), maybe he will chime in.

Hmmm...I don't think that's how it works.

Ok, I was off on the 1/2 split of the ratio, but it does split the ratio instead of multiplying it.

I remember that on Trucks, and was also sticker-shocked. That one of the reasins why I didn't use my old 3-spd trans. Not worth it when that price will get ya a built 4-spd.

The price tag didn't used to be that bad. When they added all the electronics crap to it, the price went up about a grand. You can still score them on ebay with the old electronics though for considerably cheaper.

The idea of gear splitting is not to multiply the gear ratio, but provide you with a ratio in between the standard ratios of the transmission. This would allow you to stay in upper rpms more when racing. As for using one on a transmission already with OD, I think it's a waste. There's no need for double OD, unless your running 5.14's and a 28" tire or a heavy Tahoe with 4.56's and a short tire . Even so it'd be cheaper to swap to a 6spd. I could see if you had a 60E and you used it in between 1st and 2nd since that gear split blows. You could leave the trans in 3rd and engage the GV unit for OD while towing. But then again it'd just be cheaper to beef up the 60E for towing in 4th and put in a stall with a better shift extension.

I think they priced themselves out of a lot of the market with the new electronics.

I agree about the double over drive. I say make a unit that supports under 4th gear. That should reduce price. I think they just over did the idea. Racers don't need all that **** up top unless they are running 5.14's like you say. Again, I like it, but cut that price in half before I even spark an interest.

I think the idea is to have big gear ratios for the track, then drive home at 22mpg. Wouldn't be too bad, but not for the price
