Sounds like your smelling cooked trans oil. I wonder if your lines are damaged or clogged and possibly preventing the fluid to cool.

I was getting a trans temp gauge code a while back. I'm gonna try to drop the pan this weekend and use some of that Lucas stuff.

just checked the fluid and it was a little over the operating range. and there were a few tiny pieces of metal on the dip stick. seems my trans may be breathing its last breaths.
