Question 4l60e plain and simple.

well my stock tranny in my truck last 154,xxx hard miles, never changed fluid, etc. Check ball ended up beating up the separator plate and got stuck and I'd say ended up maxing line pressure or something causing 3/4 snap ring blow out...

So we rebuilt the trans with a circle d 3200, transgo hd 2, new shift solenoids, seal, orings, alum pistons, 4l65e clutches koleen steels in 3/4... But we drilled the 2/3 apply hole .120. Tranny lasted 1 week smoked the 3/4 clutches...

Pulled apart again and cleaned and flushed everything, new 3/4 clutches bg high energy thick steels. .015-.020 3/4 clearance with a new separator plate with .093 feed hole... This lasted 3 months and shifted awesome!

On my way home last night I got some 2/3 shift flare and my heart sank, logged it, messed with shift times, played with pressures a little bit, and again 3/4 clutches are burnt up I'm gonna guess. Fluid is dark red and smells burnt and still flares...

I'm lost on what to do or try next. I'm tired of dumping money in this thing every 2-3 months it's a case of fluid and new 3/4 clutches!! Are we over looking something?! Crack somewhere?! Trans is for the truck in sig. Me and a buddy are building the tranny. He's built several 4l60e's and has a 6 second camaro he races every weekend with a 60e he built. And several he's built with zero issues. He has a 60e in his ext cab z71 with a 33" tire and a 408 that runs 8.80's for 2 years now no problems, daily driver tow rig.

Should I buy a built tranny with warranty?! I'm tired of this and don't want to do a 80e swap! Labor is free but parts and trial and error is getting old quick! Tranny has been out 3 times in 3 months!

Truck in sig.

I put the trucool on after the first build failed in a week. I found this article a plan to do all these steps. 700R4 3-4 Clutch Failures Part 1

What's your pump setup? Has the pump been modified to hold up to higher rpm's? Which apply band and servos are you using?

If you go through it again, alto red eagle clutches throughout, kolene steels throughout, 3/4 clutches setup .015-.020 like you mentioned. Go through it with a fine tooth comb during disassembly and reassembly. Verify line pressure before considering it repaired.

Yes we did pump mods, and a vette servo set up per transgo specs. We used red altos on the first build. We used a kevlar wide band i think. 4l65e clutches on the 2nd build. The only thing I can think of when we pressed the shaft into the input drum it might have a leak after all the reading I've been doing. But the .120 feed hole smoked the first set of clutches we thought. It was flawless for 2 months then have been chasing a slight vibration... Now 3/4's are smoked again. We havent pulled it out yet.

I plan to buy a new ac delco drum and input shaft if the current one is leaking, along with a new band. Gonna check pistons, seals, o rings etc.. This stuff just gets discourageing!!!

I got most of my stuff from Dana. He's little slow with shipping but good guy.

Did you replace the reverse input drum, where the band goes around? You need a new drum with a new band. This is one of the reasons why my last tranny failed. It burned the edges of the band. the drum and band were smoked

No I didn't but plan to buy a new input drum and input shaft. I found a new ac delco input drum and shaft for $110 shipped.

What we did was press my old shaft into a used input drum. Obviously the shaft had some pretty good shock during the 3/4 snap ring blow out.
