Default Which 4L60E rebuild kit to get?

I have all the hard parts, I just need bearings, bushings, o-rings, gaskets and seals. is one better than the other? I dont want to get cheap stuff. I already have all the hard parts and upgrades.

Either a trans-tech or Toledo trans kit are the two paper rubber ring and seal kits I use. As far as bushing kits are concerned most of which are made by clevite and the bearings are made by torrington. Most all parts suppliers will sell these so just shop around. Good luck with your build. Vince

Well actually I think its Timken who makes them for these units now. Here is some info I found....

"The Torrington Company, recently acquired by the Timken Company, produces a wide array of radial and thrust needle roller bearings as well as bearings assemblies for specific applications. With manufacturing facilities located in the United States, Canada, Germany, Brazil and Australia, and with join venture facilities located in France, China, India and Japan, customers are assured that their needs can be met on a world-wide basis. The Torrington Company is able to meet the needs of any size customer in various applications and industries."

last question.

1. I have the Borg Warner 3-4 pack. Should I use the OEM clutches that come with the "deluxe" rebuild kits or source out individual packs. or are these Borg Warner as well

2. I could not find the Toledo or the Trans-Tech (I htink its Trans-tec). they didnt come up with anything on their website.

3. also, Im not finding any rebuild kits for 2006+ they only go up to 2003.

lastly, I am turning my 4l60e into a 4l65e, is there a difference for the rubber and gaskets and stuff, or is it all the same?

thanks for your time.

1)When you buy a banner(less steels) or master kit (with steels) depending on how it was prepped it might one have of many different brand of clutches. Normally for these units from my suppliers they will send me Borgs or Raybestos frictions. Just make sure you specify that you want a Borg clutch module. A deluxe kit is usually one that has bushings, one way clutches(sprag) and other components for the rebuild. Make sure to see what is included in this kit if you buy one. I would buy a kit for a 4l65E if you want to have a 7 clutch 3-4 pack otherwise you will only get 6. I myself generally order a kit, the clutches and steels for everything except the 3-4 clutch. I like to use 4l65E frictions and then use 700R4 kolene steels with the "HD" factory apply and pressure plates. By doing this I can get an 8 clutch 3-4 pack.

2) Ask them what kit they are using. Those are the only two I would use. The Toledo trans kit might be referred to as a TTK kit. I use this one most of the time.

3)The difference will be in the valve body separator plate gaskets. Its a good practice to make sure you match these up to your separator plate, case and valve body to make sure you have the correct ones. Also in 04 the case and front pump cover changed in these units. With this change there is now a new case to pump seal used instead of an oring. It is a metal rubber bonded wedge type seal. Your trans should have this. I would recommend ordering an 04 and up kit. This should get you the correct seal and gaskets for what you are doing. If you can not find the 04 and up kit in some cases this is not an issue. What you can do is order a new separator plate per the vin of your vehicle from the dealer. It will come with gaskets that are already bonded to the separator plate. You can also order the wedge style seal for the pump from either the dealer or your parts supplier. HTH Vince

Thanks Vince, I appreciate your time.

I have been accumulating parts over the last few months, including a custom drilled seperator plate from ProBuilt, and gaskets.

I have both of the ATSG manuals, the teardown/rebuild one and the one that includes all the revisions throughout the years and includes the 4l65e. some of the pictures are hard to see, but so far its been a tremendous help.

hopefully soon I will be able to put this thing back together.

Hi,
I know this is an old post, but how did the conversion/upgrade to the '65' go?
I am looking to do this as well in the next few weeks and still trying to figure out what parts exactly I'll need. I have read that the planetary gear ring has 5 as opposed to the 60 with 4. There are other changes as well I thought. From my understanding the 65 is beefier, but since this is my first rebuild, want to go with a less 'custom' route to make sure that I get it all back together and running properly. I will be adding a 40k cooler as well, so that should help things a bit too.
Any info you have would be appreciated. The manuals you have, are those the full shop manuals or the ones from amazon/ebay around $40 each? Read mixed reviews on those. (though it's almost 10 years sinice this post)
Thanks!
