So, does the donor trans have to be "99" on up to work?
Busy looking on Craigslist and Ebay now.

It does not have to be but it is usually what most do as it has the 12' bolt hole. You also want the newer style cooler line fittings as they offer better lube. New style is fitting front and rear, old style is one fitting above the other.

Good to know. I am also taking that it has to come from a 4x4? Or does the tail housing come off on either 2x4 or 4x4 80E's?

If i were you i would get the 99-01 4l80. They have the bigger OD sprag. That is what Vince suggested to me when i rebuilt mine
