Default 4L80 Slipping in 2nd after lots of spray

Ive got a stalled 80e in my truck and its started slipping in 2nd gear. Every other gear is fine and smooth. Is it possible its just the second gear clutches or is there something more that could be smoked?

First thing I'd do is put a pressure gauge on it.

Intermediate clutch failure IMO is kind of common on these units and in some cases the sprag might be starting to slip. Slow is probably wanting to see if there is a pressure loss in 2nd gear. Is this a built unit or a bone yard conversion?

In the last month I have built a few virgin 80's that had some decent miles on them. The one thing I find is that the 1-2 accumulator seals really wear and in most cases have no resistance in the bore. The one unit I built recently the 2-3 and 3-4 accumulators were the same way and that unit was pretty cooked. When I removed the housing from the valve body the pistons fell out.

Now I guess we could assume that either the seals are worn or they have been over heated to cause this. Either way you need to look at this kind of stuff when determining a failure in a unit. I myself like to make sure to have a good AFL bore, use a stiffer spring behind the 1-2 shift valve, and also use a modified tcc valve in the valve body. From there always make use to address the bushings in these units and I feel that end play is very important in any build. HTH Vince

X2 I have also seen this as well as the lugs on the case breaking off allowing the intermediate snap ring to be half hanging out just enough to let clutch slip. The case lugs were the death of my 4 yr old JY 80E.
