Default 4L80E 2002 4wd to 1992 2wd swap questions

Hi, I have a 1992 2500 with a 6.5 diesel, and the tranmission has lost reverse and OD. I can get a 2002 4wd 4L80E transmission and I was wondering what is necessary to put it in my truck.

That would also give me a spare tranny to pratice my rebuilding skills.

I think that I would need to change the output shaft and housing and install a lubrication fitting in the case and I would be good to go, but that seems to easy. Any help you all could give me would be great.

The rear output shaft and the torque converter will be different. In the back there is a plug that needs to be changed. You may also find the rear planetary in the rear is missing the reluctor ring and has a dummy sensor in place as well. You will also find the 4x4 has plug in the rear of the case were as the 4x2 has a lug with a hole to lubricate the rear out put shaft at the slip yoke.

This thread has some good documentation in it for the difference between 4x4 and 4x2 4L80E

Thanks for the help. I read the thread and it got me going in the right direction. I had a couple extra questions.

How different is the troque converter, could I just use my old one?

Also how hard is it to change the rear planetary? I am guessing I would have to pull out all the insides for that.

If your torque converter is any good you can reuse your original one from your vehicle. Just so you know, You can get a remanufactured one for around $100 Just make sure you get the correct one for your application. The stall ratios are different depending on the application. They also so minor difference internally to beef them up for for applications like diezel.

Rear shaft replacement and the rear planetary require complete disassembly of the unit. You can buy the reluctor ring and press it on so you can reuse the planetary or get a good use planetary if you decide to take it apart.
