4l80e center support stuck
I cant get the center support out. It looks like its stuck on the bottom of the trans case. I see a retaining clip behind it. How do I get it out. Need help with rebuild. Thanks Bryan

There are three possible things that hold that support in the case. Rear cooler fitting (outside the case), Snap ring (inside the case), and the center support bolt (Valve body to case area). Hope this helps, Vince.

Thanks for chiming in Vince. I took the center support bolt out, I'll have to check the cooler fitting, I can see a snap ring but I cant get to it. It seems to be behind the center support. I will double check. THanks for the info.

I think I am in trouble. I bought this trans thinking it was ok, nothing wrong with it. Under closer examination I am finding alot of defects. First sign of trouble was the wrong oil pan bolts. Second was, I had to bang out the 4th clutch housing. Third, I found a chunk of metal and a broken snap ring. Forth the center support is stuck. Fith, I notice that the one of the vains where the check ***** go, is cracked. Is this trans salvagable? I bought the trans for $600. The guy said it was good, I picked it up from his transmission shop, I took his word for it. I am a sucker.

The second picture looks like the cooler fitting needs to be removed. The last picture looks like the check ball has been damaging the case. You can probably clean that up without a problem. The first picture which snap ring is that? Looks like from the forth clutch housing.

Dam! Your good. I feel like I just went and seen a fortune teller. Yes it was the 4th clutch housing snap ring. That little unidentified piece is melted plastic. Yes, I did have to take out the cooler lines. I got the center support out after that. I didn't know the cooler lines went so deep into the case. The guy cut the lines really short, I didn't think about them. The book I have didn't mention it. Thank you. Would any transmission shop be able to fix the valve body? Oh, do I really need the installer tools for the teflon snap rings? That is all the questions I have, I promise. Thanks again...

What is wrong with the valve body or are you referring to the case? The Teflon seals can be installed without the proper tools but a little more difficult. You can use a pick to work them on and then use the part that the ring will ride in to size it. The forth clutch housing will definitely require a tool if you decide to take it apart. Vince

Yeah, I was referring to the case. I figure if I am going to rebuild it I might as well take apart the 4th clutch housing. I am not going to buy the tools for one rebuild, maybe I can just have the transmission shop down the street do that part for me. Thanks again.

Some one told me that I would be bi-passing the the check ***** and some of the valve body if I got a shift kit on the 4l80. Is this true? And do you think I would be ok to just do that? I don't know how much a trany shop would charge to fix the case/valve body damage.

The HD-2 shift kit requires you to remove two check *****. As long as the check ***** will still seal the holes that they sit over, then the case should be OK. You can use Torlon (plastic) ***** when you put it back together to eliminate any further case damage.
