Default 4L80E gearing

Would a lower 1st gear ratio kit in a 4L80E be of any benefit in a higher output application? i.e. something more than an FLT Level 5 65E can handle.

I guess it would also depend on the setup. e.g turbo vs positive displacement blower. I'm also thinking that it would make for a slightly weaker trans.

I Have been wanting to do the same thing. I don't think it would be a weaker trans, I think it would be better. that way it could actually use the power to move the truck and would be less load on the trans. whereas the tall first gear now makes for a big load on the trans since it can't move the truck as easily.

Leave the stock ratio if you are going turbo, it may be worth it to upgrade to the higher first gear for a s/c. Only problem is from everything I have read in order to use the TCI upgraded first gear can only be used for the older 80e's. My truck is a dog with the 80e till about 30 when it really throws you in your seat and hauls ***. I have a few more mods to try but Im also running a stock 80e stall.

Thought that was just tuning-related. But we can now change the ratios in the tune. Don't know if there is a physical difference that precludes using the kit in newer 80e's.

Honestly, I haven't noticed any detriment to the stock ratio. No WOT runs yet, but part throttle it moves from the word go.

Not all of us can enjoy a 1000 HP setup on a tall first gear.

"From the word go", wtf, not all of us can afford a vehicle that drives with voice commands either. sshhhheeeeesh

So at what power level would you not bother changing the gearing?
6, 7....800 RWHP? I expect it will vary with the setup..... how the power ramps up, vehicle weight, TC stall speed, etc.

Without the boost it's not 1000hp

I just told my truck what you said. The engine started and it backed out of the garage. I'm not sure where it's going, but it sounded pissed...

I'd think any of those numbers would be fine. It's no doubt impacted by the 2wd/4wd thing and tire selection too (and I think probably more those two than off idle hp).

I'm also running 4.10s with a 26.5-27" tall tire.
