Default is the 4l80e really all that?

is the 4l80e really the be all end all trans? or does it just take longer to break? how long does a built one last with 6-700hp that gets driven hard daily? will it take years of abuse or months? are the clutches stronger than the 4l60e? as in have more clutch area per pack? i understand the parts are stronger but are the clutches bigger and less likely to slip?

Mine is stock except for the HD-2 shift kit. I have been beating on it for 2+ years now at track and on the street along with lots of daily driving. Im sure It's on borrowed time but I have another low mile 80E all ready for the day it gives up.

Yes the clutch packs have more surface.
It is basically a TH-400 with overdrive.I believe it shares some of the same parts also.It also has less gear ratio drop between ***** there for less torque is transferred into heat.

I had a completely stock one for almost 4 years. Put about 130 1/4 mile runs on it and it is my DD. Carry about 400-500 lbs of supplies and tools in the bed. It had 27k on it when I installed it. It now has a total of almost 150k on it. It started acting up a few days ago. Iam getting it rebuilt to stock specs, except for a shift kit and vacuum mod. The clutch surface area on the 80e is about 3 times the area of the 60e. My rwhp is about 600 for daily use and 700 at the track. A stock 80e is superior to a fully built 60e.

yes. it is completely bad ***.

i would expect a built 80 to last pretty much forever at 700rwhp.

My Rossler 4L80E gets more and more "comfortable" feeling the more boost/power I throw at it, they are quirky at times but once you work past that they are better in just about every way IMO. The shifts are great and I don't ever think twice about stabbing the throttle. I know its gonna hold. With all my 60/65's, I held my breath every time I made any WOT pulls...
